Marita is the vocalist and bassist in the Norwegian metal bands Marita Wild Cat and the bassist in Grimskull!
Can you remember when your interest for music started?
Very early, I think I was only two years old
What made you choose the instruments you play?
The bands I like and the musicians I crushed on, which happened to be mostly bass players
What made you want to sing in the way/style you do?
I’ve never thought of myself as a singer, but can’t help singing along to my favorite bands, and make my own songs, so I guess my voice came with the passion I feel when I listen to rock and metal, wanting to be one of them
How did you learn to play your instrument /sing like you do?
I took some lessons to start learning to play acoustic guitar back in 2004, but it was so boring, I quit. I started to study pics and movie clips, and read tabs instead to learn the songs I wanted to play, but since I was on my own it took time, and I didn’t mount to much, lol. It wasn’t before I met my hubby in 2005 I really started to learn stuff, switching to el-guitar. I started playing a little bass back in 2005 too, but didn’t really start learning before 2009. I started singing in 2006, encouraged by my hubby.
Do you remember the first song you learned to play/sing to?
Yeah, I think I do
Which one was it?
I think the first song I played along to was on el-guitar, and the song was «Seventh Son of a Seventh Son» by Iron Maiden. I don’t remember the first song I sang to, but my own song «Independent Lady» was the first song I recorded back in 2006
Which musicians has had the most impact on you ?
Nikki Sixx, Duff McKagan, Kai Hansen, Dave Mustaine, Gene Simmons, Dio, Joan Jett, Lee Aaron, Rob Halford, Steve Harris and many more
Nikki Sixx and Duff McKagan – because of Mötley Cruë and Guns N’ Roses, which has probably been my biggest band crushes to date. I love the music, the style, and the fact that they play bass, which made me wanting to become a bass player too
Kai Hansen – because of Gamma Ray. One of my favorite bands ever
Dave Mustaine – my biggest thrash crush ever – Megadeth is my fave thrash metal band
Gene Simmons – because The Demon! Love the style and the way he plays bass, and the KISS music is awesome!
Dio – the man, the voice, the reason I’m a metalhead \m/
Joan Jett – because she’s awesome. Love her style and music, and I’m very inspired by her when I sing
Lee Aaron – girl power! She’s awesome – her style and music… Girl crush
Rob Halford – Judas Priest is my fave band and Rob Halford’s style is very inspirational – LOVE studs and leather
Stave Harris – because Maiden! And the way he plays bass – he’s a god!
Do you have any musicians you have learned from?
I’ve learned to play el-guitar, bass and sing through my husband – he’s very talented, and he wanted to teach me how so I could join the «musicians» club too
What does playing music means to you?
It gives me strength to make it through the day, wheter it’s listening to or playing myself, it’s my source to happiness
Can you remember and describe your very first instrument?
The first instrument I got was when I was 14. It was a turquoise acoustic guitar. Very pretty. I never quite learned to play it though, because I wanted something more loud and heavy :p
Are you ever influenced by old records & tapes?
Oh yes, I looove the sound of vinyl and cassettes, it sounds so old school, and since old scool metal is life – I get very inspired!
When did you know that music was one of your missions in life?
I’ve always loved to entertain people, either singing, dancing or acting, but I soon figured out that music was the way to go. Mainly because of my love for hard rock and heavy metal, and my hope to become as good as my idols one day.
How and when did you get your band together?
The «Marita» band was only me (on vocals and bass) and my husband (on guitar and drums) back in 2006 – just a studio project, not for playing live obviously, but my brother-in-law joined in 2017 to help with bass and drums – we’re still just a studio band though
Grimskull was started in 2009 by me (on bass) and my husband (on vocals and guitar), and my brother-in-law on drums. I wanted to start a heavy metal band, tired of standing on the sideline while my hubby played in several other bands.
Which band have & are you in?
I’m in the «Marita» band and in Grimskull
How would you describe your music style to other people?
It’s kinda 80s rock and pop sounding, sometimes more heavy, sometimes a little sleazy, but as long as it sounds 80s-ish and people associate it with the coolest decade ever, that’s my mission in life
If you have played live , does it ever happen that you get nervous before a show?
I’ve only played live with Grimskull, and yes, I get very nervous, but it goes away after a while on stage
What advice would you give to beginners who wants to start a music career?
Don’t give up! And never ever change your vision! Make the music you want to make! It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but so what? Do what you love, and other people will love it too!
What kind of concerts do you like to go to yourself?
Rock and metal shows with my favorite 80s bands still going strong. I’m not about «new» music at all, and will cry my eyes out when my fave hard rockers are not touring anymore.
Have you ever gotten rejected by venues because of the kind of music you play?
Yes, a sell-out festival where I live have rejected my band Grimskull time and time again, because they only want it-music on stage. They call it a rock festival, but they have totally destroyed the term by having rap, pop and folk music playing there too. I don’t get it. But their loss 😉
As a girl , have you experienced beeing underestimated musically?
No, not really. I mean, some are surprised when they see and hear me play bass, but not so much. Same goes with singing. Some never though I had it in me, so I had to prove them wrong.
Is it difficult for you to balance your music-career with your personal-life?
No, not at all. Being a studio band, we record whenever we want to – since we have a home-studio, that is 🙂
Listening to your music, I can hear you have your own vocal sound. Is this something you have worked hard on to achieve?
Yes, kinda. At first I sang very weakly, and kinda talk-sang, a little Ace Frehley-ish, a little old school Joan Jett-ish, but then I listened to 80s Madonna when I was recording my album «Rough Stuff», and I tried to sound like her, but in a rock kind of way. I’ve always imitated people, so my voice is part mine and part someone I’m trying to sound like, lol.
Which topics are important for you to use when writing lyrics?
To not give up, to not let others bring you down, do your own thing, say fuck it and rock on! I’m also inspired by books and movies. My next album, «Bloodlust» is influenced by 80s horror movies and vampires.
And how do you see the future for you and your band?
We’ll continue to record music whenever we got time and feel inspired. We’re mosty just a studio band, but some live shows would have been fun too. But it’s easier to reach the rest of the world through sosial media, so music, pics and videos are more fun to do.
My album «Bloodlust» came out in February, and we’re working on a new Grimskull album. We’re also recording cover songs for our project «Cover This!» – I covered «God Save the Queen» by Sex Pistols last year, and got a few more cover songs coming soon.
Last but not least , what goals do you wanna reach with your music?
To keep the 80s hard rocking feeling alive. To remind people of the coolest style and music that ever was. To stay true to your own heart and see your dreams through. «Dream big. Live the life» – A.C. – Drummer in Steel Dragon from the movie Rock Star 🙂
